Perfect Soil Mix for Aroids (Philodendron, monstera, anthurium, etc)
What is the perfect Aroid potting mix? The truth is there is no such thing. When you look at a rainforest floor you are going to find Aroids thriving in different conditions and various media depending on their locations, so the right mix is often dependent on your own conditions at home.
What this post will cover is an all purpose potting mix for all aroids .
Rule of thumb is the mix need to be airy and well draining.
What you will need -
- A large bowl or bucket
- A spoon
- Coco Coir if possible or regular potting mix
- Orchid Bark
- Pumice or Perlite
- Horticultural Charcoal
- Worm Castings - Natural fertilizer for the mix
Once you have everything mix it together in a ratio of -
- 40 percent perlite/pumice
- 20 orchid bark
- 20 potting mix/ coco coir
- 10 worm casting
- 10 horticultural charcoal
Like I mentioned this will vary depending on the environment you live in. If you have drier conditions you might want to add a bit more coco coir - if you tend to over water maybe consider adding a bit more pumice or bark. What you want to avoid at all costs is a thick sludgy mixture where the roots remain wet for extended periods.
